Field Notes

  • Entirely black plumage.
  • Tail square or slightly rounded.
  • Large bill.
  • Range restricted to coastal areas.
  • Often seen in flocks.

Similar Species

The Raven is much larger, has bigger bill, wedge shaped tail. The Raven usually hops 2 or 3 times before take off, while crow flies from ground with hopping first. Crows tend to fly in straight lines with regular wing beats, Ravens circle and glide more and are more acrobatic in flight over all.
