- Large woodpecker.
- Black crescent on upper breast, black spots on chest.
- White rump Brown barred back.
- Red (west) or yellow (east) underwings.
- Red crescent on nape.
- Brown back and wings barred with black.
- Beige breast and belly spotted heavily with black.
- White rump (visible in flight).
- Tail dark on top.
