Field Notes

  • Large woodpecker.
  • Black crescent on upper breast, black spots on chest.
  • White rump Brown barred back.
  • Red (west) or yellow (east) underwings.
  • Red crescent on nape.
  • Brown back and wings barred with black.
  • Beige breast and belly spotted heavily with black.
  • White rump (visible in flight).
  • Tail dark on top.

Similar Species

The Northern Flicker is very distinctive, and not easily confused with any of our Alaskan Woodpeckers. It's the only woodpecker that feeds on the  ground.
