Field Notes

  • Fairly small, short-legged shorebird.
  • Distinctive, stiff winged,fluttery flight on bent wings.
  • Teeters tail when feeding and walking.
  • Summer: large black spots on white underparts.
  • Yellowish or pinkish legs, white wing stripe visible in flight.
  • Sexes look alike.

Similar Species

Common Sandpiper looks like young and non-breeding Spotted Sandpiper. Solitary Sandpiper has white spots on back.
