Field Notes

  • 15” to 21”
  • Fairly long tapered wings
  • Wide, short tail
  • Dark “sideburns” extend below eye
  • Brown to bluish slate on back
  • Heavily barred belly, white bib
  • Direct flight, swept backed wings
  • Capable of extreme speed.

Similar Species

The Peregrine is larger than the Merlin.  Only the Peregrine has the “sideburns”
