Field Notes

  • Small, compact diving duck.
  • Male:
    • Head is peaked and is dark purplish.
    • Black chest and tail.
    • White sides and bold stripe on secondaries.
    • Yellow eyes.
  • Blue bill.
  • Dark wing with dark tipped white secondaries and pale gray primaries.
  • Immature female similar to adult female.

Similar Species

Greater Scaup has more rounded head. Longer white wing strip. Female has more white by base of bill.
