Field Notes

  • Medium-sized long-legged shorebird.
  • Long legs are yellow to orange.
  • Long, slightly upturned bill which is longer that which is longer than head.
  • Dark bill often has a slightly paler base.
  • Bright yellow legs Yellowlegs often raise both wings upon landing.
  • Sexes look alike.

Similar Species

Lesser Yellowlegs, smaller, shorter with much shorter bill. Common Greenshank is similar, but very rare on the Kenai Peninsula.
