Field Notes

  • Huge, long-legged, long-necked wader.
  • Gray-blue overall Long, thick, yellow bill.
  • White head with black stripe above eye.
  • Front of neck white with black vertical streak.
  • Has long neck plumes.
  • Often holds neck in an "S" curve at rest and in flight.

Similar Species

The Sandhill crane is gray or brownish in color. The Heron flys with it's neck in an "S" shape, A Crane's neck is stretched straight out.
