  • Small black and white woodpecker.
  • Short bill.
  • Black wings with white spotting on coverts and flight feathers.
  • White back.
  • White underparts Mostly black head.
  • Broad white supercilium.
  • Black nap, rump, and tail with white outer tail feathers, black bars.
  • Adult male has red spot at rear of head.

Similar Species

  • Hairy Woodpecker is larger with bill longer than head length. Unmarked outer tail feathers.
  • Three-toed has barring on sides and back.
  • Black-backed has black back and barred sides.
