Field Notes

  • Small, tern-like gull.
  • Gray mantle and black hood (black ear patch in winter).
  • Black bill.
  • Orange-red legs and dark eye.
  • Outer wing has white leading edge and narrow black trailing edge.
  • Short, thin, black bill.

Similar Species

Black-headed Gull is larger with longer bill.  Adult Franklin's Gull is larger with darker mantle with white band across wings.
