Field Notes

  • Diving duck, medium sized.
  • Male: White crescent between eye and bill.
  • White below.
  • White spots on wing.
  • Yellow eye.
  • Sloped forehead with flatter crown and peak at forward part of crown.
  • Small, stubby bill.
  • White patches on the secondaries and secondary coverts visible in flight.
  • Juvenile similar to adult female but usually with darker bill

Similar Species

Common Goldeneye male has greenish head with round white spot behind bill. In flight, Common Goldeneye shows more white on wings.
