Field Notes

  • Medium-sized tern with short, slender, pointed bill.
  • Dark gray above and below.
  • White forehead.
  • Black cap.
  • Black bill and legs.
  • Long, deeply forked tail.
  • Smoothly rounded head without crest.
  • Mostly pale underwing with dark bar on secondaries.
  • Sexes look alike.

Similar Species

Arctic Tern has bright red bill and legs and does not have white "forehead".
