Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring?  The weather is mild in the summer with temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to the mid 70s.  We recommend dressing in layers and encourage guests to bring raingear and comfortable waterproof footwear.  Don’t forget your camera and sunscreen too!  Everything else you need is at your disposal at the lodge, including bank fishing gear and tackle.  We have a growing collection of assorted sizes of hip waders and rubber boots for those who want to get up close and personal with the river.

What about Fishing Licenses and Regs?  You can purchase your license online or at the lodge upon your arrival.  The fishing regulations are quite complex and always changing for our part of the state, so if in doubt, please ask and we will clarify as best we can!

How do I process my fish? We have an excellent fish cleaning station at Marlows on the Kenai.  Each cabin has its own freezer in which to store your processed fish.  We do recommend however that you have your fish professionally vacuum packed and flash frozen.  We work with Ed’s Kasilof Seafoods.   They will even pick up your fish nightly at the lodge!  You can take your fish boxes with you as luggage, or streamline your travel and have the fish shipped to your door.  Any charter booked with Marlows includes cleaning and filleting your catch.

What amenities will I find at the lodge?  Our river front cabins are very modern and offer many modern conveniences.  Each cabin has a full, well equipped kitchen, satellite TV, and a modern bathroom(s).  You have access to the outdoor kitchen, grills, coin-op laundry and wireless internet.  Our riverbank walkways offer a comfortable place from which to bank fish using our gear and tackle.  We have a fully equipped office at your disposal  for your corporate retreat.

What can I do when I’m not fishing?  The Kenai Peninsula is known as Alaska’s Playground.  Hiking, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, dog sledding on a glacier, shopping, berry picking…. You name it; we can set you up with it!

What is the shopping like?  Soldotna and Seward both have full grocery store options.  Anchorage has a Sam’s Club and Costco if you would like to shop on your way down.  There are many gift shops and art galleries on both sides of the peninsula.

Are there Restaurants available?  Restaurants are plentiful on both sides of the Peninsula.  In Seward you can walk to local restaurants and bars, and in Soldotna there are even more dining options within a 30 minute drive.  Don’t forget you have a full, well stocked kitchen in your cabin as well as the outdoor kitchen at your disposal.  Nothing tastes better than a freshly grilled sockeye you just caught yourself!  We also offer a meal option (all breakfasts, lunches and dinners) for our lodge guests.

What kind of fishing gear will I use?  That depends on what kind of fish you are after.  We use top of the line rods by Lamiglass, Sage, and G- Loomis, with reels by Shimano and Penn.  Our tackle is tailored to the species and current fishing rules and regulations.

What kind of boat will I be on?  Our Kenai River boats are 20’ Willie Predator riverboats with 4- stroke Yamaha outboards.  They fish 4 anglers and all boats have deluxe seats with backs and arm rests.  Our Offshore-Saltwater boat is a 37 X 14 foot high speed Catamaran. The Shearwater is equipped with state of the art electronics, twin 250HP diesel engines, marine bathroom, a heated cabin with comfortable seating for 6 and a huge deck  with 100 feet of railing for our 6 anglers from which to fish and sightsee.

What is provided on Fishing Charters?   For our fishing charters, Marlows on the Kenai  provides G-Loomis Rods, Shimano-Penn-Okuma Reels, baits, instruction, and the best guides in Alaska.  Everything is provided for a great fishing experience.  You need to bring your license, your lunch, something to drink and your camera.
